Beginning the new year as the new you usually just means getting a gym membership for some people, but for a surprisingly vast amount of couples, this also includes getting a divorce. In fact, there tends to be a major surge in divorces in January and, according to American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, 1 out of 5 couples plan to divorce after the holidays. Why do so many couples ultimately decide to call it quits so soon after a series of holidays that essentially promote togetherness?
While there is never a perfect time for divorce, oftentimes, many individuals do not want to sue their spouse for divorce on Christmas Eve. The holidays are already stressful enough and, even if a spouse is certain he or she wants to end the marriage, it is generally easier to endure one last holiday as a family before calling it quits, especially if children are involved. People do not want to ruin a family getaway, or vacations that were planned far in advance. It can also be uncomfortable to announce a divorce during such a family-and-friends-oriented time.
January 4 seems to be the busiest day in particular for divorces and, incidentally, a day when online dating traffic tends to peak, according to Match.com. Of course, this is not all due to the spike in divorce rates though there is likely some correlation.
A Fresh Start
The new year seems like the best time to file for a divorce not only because the holidays are over, but because many individuals begin making resolutions and feel empowered by the idea of having a clean slate and letting go of things they feel are weighing them down.
Moreover, many married couples spend ample amounts of time with each other during the holidays, which gives them a chance to face their issues and take a good look at any deficiencies in the marriage. During the year, people are often busy going to work and might not realize that the relationship is not working or contributing to their happiness.
